One Hundred Years of Singapore is worth reissuing for a number of reasons perhaps the most important being that, together with Charles Burton Buckley’s An Anecdotal History of Old Times in Singapore 1819-1867 and Song Ong Siang’s One Hundred Years’ History of the Chinese in Singapore, it completes the trilogy which forms a cornerstone of a bibliography of the history of Singapore. Unlike its companion volumes, One Hundred Years of Singapore has not been reprinted since publication and is now rare and difficult to obtain.

Product Description

This title is part of Robert Yeo’s First Editions, his preloved titles.

Besides the provision of free entertainment and refreshments on the great day Singapore marked its centenary in February 1919 by founding a college of higher education (which subsequently became the nucleus of a university) and commissioning the publication (for 1921) of a two-volume history, of which the present book is an unabridged reprint.

With its wealth of background information, partly derived from personal reminiscences and old newspaper reports, and its blend of erudition and gentle wit in the case of contributions by Roland Braddell and others, One Hundred Years of Singapore focuses on the activities of the European community (it was considered that the Chinese deserved a volume of their own, hence One Hundred Years’ History of the Chinese in Singapore, reprinted by Oxford University Press in 1984), and portrays an active, busy people defying the equatorial sun to create a new and vibrant society with its own special character. But the hero of this survey is Thomas Stamford Raffles and the greatest adulation is reserved for him and his ideals.

Dr Mary Turnbull, who provides an Introduction to this reprint, is the author of A History of Singapore 1819-1988.
