The banyan tree at the edge of Pak Buyung's village is a special place for the boy Adi. On that tree, he dreams, thinks of school, spies on people and reflects on the difficult life of his family. Adi doesn't truly understand the turbulent times he is living through and the problems facing the adults around him, but he knows that he can help his family to face social disintegration and poverty.

Not all is bleak, Adi delights in watching cinema and socialising with older acquaintances. However, the uncertainties of a newly independent country, the demands of various parties and social problems continue to threaten the peace of Adi's family and its neighbours. The tale of Adi and the multiethnic people of Batas Latas is set in the 1960s Singapore, an age filled with gang activites, political, social and religious turbulences, the events of Konfrontasi, riots and the separation of Singapore from Malaysia, all of which caused a huge impact on the lives and psyche of its people.
